NEITHER UPM, NOR ITS TRAIN
(A documentary series)
The Finnish company «UPM» is interested in building its second pulp mill in Uruguay. After the first UPM pulp mill was constructed during the first government of the progressive political party “Frente Amplio”, there was little resistance from locals. The population trusted it would be a good investment for the development of the country.
Now, Uruguayans are totally aware of the negative impact that pulp mills have in their territory, and how the narrative about development is just a fairy tale. The population not only have to fight against the construction of the biggest pulp mill in the world in one of their most important (as well as fragile) rivers, but also have to stand against the construction of a mega-train, which will pass through 23 cities, affecting approximately 35 thousand people and which will be built up by the Uruguayan government as a present for UPM.
«Neither UPM, nor its Train” is a documentary which invites Uruguayans, as well as the Latinamerican community and people from all over the world, to take part in our fight.
These audiovisual documents are valuable as archives that tell the story of the Uruguayans that decided to defend their people, their health and their territory against the State, against the Finnish company UPM and against imperialism.
This documentary shows the fight from the inside, based on the registry of the organic social militancy.
